The matrix does not and should not be replaced, just rinsed lightly with tank water when the filter is cleaned. The purigen needs to be recharged or replaced when it turns to a darkish brown. I personally run 4-5 canisters on each tank, and I clean one per water change, so every 7-10 days in my case, which gives each filter about a monthly or 6 weekly cleaning interval. If you’re going for longer intervals I would keep a close eye on NO3 levels. I would suggest to keep an extra portion of purigen handy, so when you do the cleaning, instead of recharging and opening the filter again after a few days you can use the clean purigen and recharge the used one for the next filter clean. If you are using fine filter floss in your fluvals I would also suggest to clean them out more frequently, either rinsing or replacing the floss. Takes about 10 mins per filter/change.

I clean the sponges and filter floss every 2 weeks. I don’t mess with the matrix unless it looks like it needs to be rinsed probably every 6 months or so. Dirty filters are nitrate factories. I know why I clean my filters. I know it’s important. You either listen to the people who don’t have the “energy/time” to ensure their fish are healthy and have emaculate water quality…or, you listen to me and another guy who say you should clean your filters regularly. I follow this guy on YouTube “Kaveman Aquatics” and he just did a video on not cleaning his fx6 for a year. Perhaps if Kevin cleaned his filters regularly his nitrates wouldn’t be through the roof in a week’s time. In the case of dirty filters, use your common sense.
