To bleed a canister filter, also known as priming, you need to fill it with water. The electric pump inside the filter can’t operate without water in it and running a water pump dry will cause it to burn out. One method to prime the filter is by using a powerhead in the intake, which will pump water into the filter and displace air. Another method is by using a hose to create a siphon, pulling air out of the filter and allowing water to flow in. A third method is by using a handheld pump to start a siphon in the filter, allowing gravity to help with priming. Filters should be kept under tanks to allow gravity to help with priming. If your tank is on the floor, fill the filter with as much water as you can before putting the lid back on, then use a pump to start the siphon. Once air stops coming out of the outlet, you should be ready to turn your filter on. It's essential to prime your filter to prevent it from breaking and to ensure it operates correctly.
